7 of the world's unfamous & unusual foods!

Have you heard about Bamies, a classic Greek dish made with the vegetable Okra, consisting of sautéed onions and fresh or canned tomatoes braised in olive oil with a seasoning of fresh herbs?

Or about the spiked Durian fruit from Malaysia with an odd smell enough to be banned from restaurants?

Here is a collection of 7 unusual fruits from the world.

  1. Pisto: Spain, La Mancha.

It is believed that pisto was introduced to Spain by the Moors, who used to call it Alboronia. This dish is known to be very similar to the famous ratatouille from France.

It consists of a variety of cooked and fried vegetables such as tomatoes, onions, bell peppers, and courgettes and is sometimes served cold as a starter or warm as a side dish. Pisto is also prepared with variations, such as added ingredients like potatoes, pumpkin, or ham.

  1. Tartiflette au Reblochon: France

As attractive as the name sounds, so is the dish. Tartiflette au Reblochon is a simple preparation made with potatoes, onions, reblochon cheese, spices, and white wine. It is easily found on most of the menus in French restaurants and is sometimes prepared by adding bacon or ham to the dish.

  1. Mujaddara: Lebanon

Are you thinking of visiting a Middle Eastern restaurant soon? Don’t forget to try this beautiful dish called Mujaddara, which is layered with lentils and rice at the bottom, followed by caramelised onions on the top. It is usually served with some creamy or spicy sauces on the side.

  1. Century Egg: China

A Chinese egg-based delicacy dish, also known as hundred-year eggs or thousand-year eggs, is essentially rotten eggs. It is made by preserving duck, chicken, or quail eggs in a mixture of clay, ash, and salt for months. It makes the yolks turn a shade of dark green or grey and has a strong, sulphur-like smell to them.

  1. Tuna Eyeballs: Japan

Our next unique food is Tuna Eyeballs which originated from Japan. It is a fishy delicacy found on menus in restaurants across the country.

This dish has many different recipes, but the easiest way to prepare it is by the method of boiling or steaming it with a seasoning of garlic or soy. It also has a different flavour than the normal tuna fish and instead tastes a bit like squid.

  1. Dou fu fa: Hong Kong

This dish was created centuries ago by a Chinese prince, and since then, this tofu pudding has become a popular street food. With a good amount of protein, calcium and iron, this dessert consists of creamy tofu topped with various savoury or sweet garnishes.

It is made with coagulated soy milk to create a tofu product with an incredibly soft consistency. This versatile sweet treat has a mild taste and makes up for a simple yet satisfying snack.

  1. Huitlacoche: Mexico

Have you ever heard of eating corn fungus? This weird food originates from Mexico and is known as corn smut or Mexican truffle. It is a diseased corn cob, or one can say that, huitlacoche is made from a plant disease that grows on the ears of corn, around the kernels, in puffy, grey clouds.

It is a local delicacy, highly regarded as a culinary speciality and has a woody & earthy flavour from the fungus.

“Food for us comes from our relatives, whether they have wings or fins or roots. That is how we consider food. Food has a culture. It has a history. It has a story. It has relationships.”
